2026 update from Malcolm:
I acquired CSL 2275441, from Scott Gordon in about 1986. Scott had imported several CS coupes from Germany in the early 1980's.
I had previously purchased a rusty 2800 CS from him and I restored it. He had a white CSL in need of body restoration and I owned Schneider Auto Karosserie in Salt Lake City, Utah.
I did a body restoration and paint on Scott's Alpine white CSL in exchange for 2275441.
It had no title, no engine and transmission and the body was in overall very poor condition.
When he imported the car, it didn't complete the necessary DOT modifications and the US government was looking for the car to seize it and destroy it.
He had kept in hidden. Over several years, I acquired all of the aluminum panels and other distinctive CSL parts. The doors and aluminum hinges came from a customer car (Chrissie Bamberger) that was originally Inka orange.
The rear trunk/boot lid I sourced new, from Vasek Polak BMW in California. They had it in stock.
The original rear batwing was sourced from RC Motorsports, Richard Conway. I believe that he was in South Carolina.
He also sold me the front air dam, rear fiberglass bumper and roof spoiler. I had the back window and rear side windows fabricated at Regional Supply plastics in Salt Lake City.
I had an original Perspex back window from the Inka car and it was unusable. I made an impression of the Perspex name and numbers and pressed it into the heated up rear window that I had made.
It wouldn't fool an expert, but it looked fairly authentic. The front fender wind splits came from BMW of Murray, that was still able to source them from BMW along with new sheet metal parts, rubber, and the complete factory motorsport stripe kit. They are not reproduction.
I later acquired Chrissie Bamberger's CSL when she wrecked it badly. I restored the body and a broker sold it to a customer in Japan for $22,000.
That's all I know about where it went to. It was pearl white when I got it and it was stripped of paint and returned to the original Inka color with factory black stripes, also from BMW of Murray.
It had the roof spoiler, fiberglass rear bumper, front air dam, wind splits, perspex windows, Scheel interior, and aluminum panels. It was an earlier carbureted car, while 2275441 was injected.
With no title for 2275441, it was common at that time, to buy an Alabama title. A licensed dealer in Alabama would arrange the transaction.
Alabama doesn't require a title on an older vehicle and they can trade hands legally with a bill of sale.
I sold the car to the dealer on paper, he then sold it back with a legal Alabama Bill of Sale.
I was then able to get a Utah title in my name with an Alabama Bill of Sale.
I got a divorce in 1993 and we sold 2275441. It was then purchased from me by Dan Koturov from Colorado, for $15,000, along with all of my spare CS parts. I
t was painted by Pat Packer in my shop, the original Polaris silver in Glasurit 54 line paint. The stripe kit wasn't yet installed although the interior was freshly redone, it still had the original carpeting and headliner, new upholstery on the Scheel seats, Alpina wheels, all new rubber seals and aluminum side moldings. It had one new tail light and the other was the best one that I still had. I owned over a dozen CS coupes over a decade or more. I only owned 2 CSL cars.
Dan claimed that he restored the car, I in fact sourced the correct parts, did the entire body and paint, interior and more. Dan sourced the correct engine and transmission, and perhaps new suspension parts. I'm sure that Dan can validate my claims. I was planning to install a Euro 635, 3.5 liter with a Getrag 5 speed gearbox. That never happened....
Post 2011
CSI (bmwclassicparts) did
restoration work on this car for a customer in China, who bought
the car at the Monterey auction and correct the many wrong parts
that had been installed on it over the years, get everything
working again, and do paint, trim, and interior repair.
2011:
This “Batmobile” from 1973, chassis 2275441, is the 12th Series
3 car produced. It was professionally restored by noted BMW
coupe specialists Dan Koturov and Carl Nelson between 1997 and
1998 and carefully maintained in show-quality condition ever
since. In addition to its desirable Polaris Silver exterior
finish with tri-color 'M' stripes, it retains all the correct
lightweight aluminum body panels (door skins, hood and trunk
lid) and Plexiglas side windows, as well as the deleted front
bumper and a black fiberglass rear bumper. The complete suite of
“Batmobile” aerodynamic devices includes the roof hoop, rear
wing, rear spoiler, front-fender wind splits and a front air
dam. Performance is even stronger, with engine displacement
increased to 3.5 liters and a Shrick 282 camshaft. The interior
is equipped with a set of correct, period-style Scheel racing
seats, and the car is complete with original equipment spec
Alpina wheels and with Michelin XWX tires.
