History by Richard Washer:
Yet Another one that got away from me......
This Fjord CSL is known as the “ Chelsea Bridge” car.
I had spotted it for sale in circa late 1988, in Classic and
Sportscar magazine @ from memory £3,500 or £4,000.
So my CSL enthusiast pal Mark and i hot footed it up to Chelsea to
view it, one Saturday morning.
We were confronted with a car that had an amazingly good body shell,
we just couldnt believe just how rot free and original, this Fjord
car was!! The paint had faded and
“Someone” in the past had added the dodgy “ Richard Grant” ( we
believe ) spoilers to it and mud flaps 😳 The rear end was very
saggy due to worn springs and shocks ( these cars need Billstein
sport shocks and progressive rate springs, to handle properly ) and
i recall the drivers seat sponge had collapsed.
We both had a short drive in it and i decided that i just had to
have it 😍
But, i had a TR6 to sell and i just couldnt sell it in time ☹️. I
had allready rang the vendor and tried to do a swap and he said “
just go and get a bank loan” ! Several weeks later i was nearby for
work so i drove over in my company Ford Orion and there the CSL sat,
parked up by Chelsea Bridge. I had another look over it and omg it
was so rot free. Sadly that was the last time i saw it as it sold
soon after. It hasnt been taxed for many years, but where is it now
??
It was last taxed in England in 1996. I suspect that its been
exported.
