2023 seller description"

This BMW 3.0 CSL is powered by the matching-numbers 3.0-litre straight-six, mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. An original UK-market car, this example was first registered in February 1973. It benefits from an older photo-documented restoration with Munich Legends, as well as some mechanical recommissioning in summer 2022 using parts supplied by Jaymic. The odometer indicates 12,847 miles, though this is not warranted, as the odometer is believed to be on its second cycle. The accurate mileage is thought to be 112,847 miles.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES Around 1,275 examples of the 3.0 CSL were built to homologate the model for racing in the European Touring Car Championship. Designed to be lightweight, thinner steel than found in the CS or CSi models was used, and the trim and soundproofing was deleted. Aluminium alloy doors, bonnet, and boot lid were fitted, as well as Perspex side windows. The 500 3.0 CSLs exported to the UK were built in 1972 and then registered mainly in 1973. They were designated as ‘City Pack’ (‘Stadtpaket’) cars as they had sound deadening, electric glass windows rather than Perspex, and the chrome E9 bumpers. They did however retain aluminium doors, boot lid and bonnet – and this car still has those lightweight body features. This BMW (E9) 3.0 CSL is finished in Inca Orange, complemented by a black pinstripe with ‘3.0 CSL’ lettering, and attractive chrome trim pieces. It rides on 14-inch multi-spoke wheels with black centre panels, shod with new Dunlop Sport Classic tyres. Inside, it has black leather upholstery with fabric seat panels, elegant wood trim pieces and checked black and orange carpets. Other equipment includes a heater, a cigarette lighter and an updated three-spoke Moto-Lita steering wheel; however, an original ‘Batmobile’ steering wheel is also included. Accompanying the vehicle will be the original owner’s manuals, sales brochure and toolkit, correspondence from the BMW Drivers Club, a spare key and a collection of maintenance invoices and MOT test certificates. As well as various invoices documented maintenance and recommissioning works, there is also a full photographic record of the prior restoration.

CONDITION The resprayed Inca Orange paintwork is said to be in good condition, with minor stone chips on the front end and wear on the rear spoiler. Inside, save for minor indentation on the seats, blemishes on the heater and wear on the driver’s door card, the cabin presents very well. The seller is not aware of any mechanical or electrical faults. The most recent MOT test was on 8 June 2018 at an indicated 12,297 miles, which was a clean pass with no advisories or defects. SERVICE HISTORY The car was recommissioned in summer 2022 at Outwood Classic in Hampshire, using parts supplied by leading BMW specialist Jaymic. Technicians replaced the engine oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, brake fluid, engine mounts, 123 ignition distributor, ignition coil and coolant hoses. All suspension springs were also replaced, plus the front and rear anti-roll bar drop links, lower ball joint gaiters, centre steering drag link, brake discs, brake pads, and handbrake cables. The car was also fitted with new tyres, bonnet badge, bonnet vent grilles, carpets and steering wheel. The electric window motors and alloy wheels were refurbished, while the exhaust downpipes were heat-wrapped. In total, around £10,000 was invested in parts and labour during 2022. SUMMARY This BMW (E9) 3.0 CSL is an eye-catching example of the iconic classic coupe, equipped with striking Inca Orange paintwork and the City Pack to add a touch of refinement, while retaining its aluminium doors, bonnet and boot lid. Benefiting from a prior photo-documented restoration, and having been mechanically recommissioned in summer 2022, it is now ready to be enjoyed out on the open road.
