Title:

  • 199X onwards: FWW 470L

  • 19XX to 1990: private plates

Mileage: 1/2015: 77 306 miles

Specification: in 2015: City Pack, Electric windows, PAS, Scheel sports seats, Alloy wheels, Aluminum bonnet, boot lid and door skins. 16 inch Alpina wheels. Motorsport front air dam.

Exterior: in 2015 this CSL makes quite the impression when it comes into view. The body on this stunning car was fully rebuilt by an experienced E9 specialist back in the 90s and it has remained in excellent solid condition having been kept in a garage ever since and never used in the rain. This is evident from the condition of the bodywork and the spotlessly clean wheel arches that remain in perfect rust free condition. There is a comprehensive photo album of the restoration showing the car before and after the work and still to this day retains its striking appearance. The laminated green tint windscreen appears original still containing the factory fitted running in stickers and the correct start procedure. All of the chrome trim remains in good condition with no major pitting and only a few light scratches from its 40 years. The paint finish now over 20 years old remains in superb condition, a testament to how well the work was done and how well the car has been looked after, the only signs of ageing is a small chip and reaction with the aluminum on the leading edge of the bonnet.

Interior: the interior in a BMW E9 coupe is like none other, beautifully laid out with lashings of wood trim it is a wonderful place to be. Slide into the Scheel seats and it’s obvious this is a special car. The seats in this particular car are in lovely condition with no tears and the wood trim remains in good condition with no major marks or peeling. There is a period radio neatly fitted however the only sound track available is the straight 6 engine growl as the radio is not linked up to any speaker and therefore no unsightly speaker holes in the door cards or trim. The steering wheel is leather clad and a factory fitted wheel that is commonly found in some of the City Pack cars. The plastic carpet covers by the front seat (all too easily broken or lost) are still present finishing off the interior nicely.

Engine:

The engine has just been fully rebuild and refurbished in house by our BMW trained technician, passionately reconstructed by him with fond memories having spent 30 years at BMW being trained in the 70s on these very cars. The engine was fully stripped diamond honed then built back up with genuine pistons and bearing shells. The head was stipped and rebuilt with any new parts necessary.

The car starts quickly from cold and idles correctly right up to temperature, it is strong and runs smoothly after the extensive rebuild. The gearbox remains smooth and precise and the clutch fully functional.

Wheels tyres and breaks: non original 16 inch Alpina wheels that are in good condition and suit the car perfectly. Although sadly not all matching the tyres have good tread all round with all of the discs and pads in good condition with plenty of life left. The front calipers have recently be overhauled and replaced with new units.

eBay March 2012 - extracts

Since that was done, car has only been used during summer months and the remainder of the year has been dry stored, therefore it is still a very solid example unlike many CS i have seen over the years.

Bad Points are:

There are a coupe of small dents in nearside rear wing, with damage to arch cover, small dent in nearside door.

Rear bumper need re-chroming. A tiny crack in windscreen on nearside, has been tested since, and could be repaired. Door skins aren't as good as they now supply.

A couple of other things to mention about the car, there is a small chip on the leading edge of the bonnet, although the interior wood work is pretty good there is slight lifting of the laminate on the door strips, and also the cover which protects the heater matrix and fan is missing,

Comment from 2006:

  • The vendor reports that, at the time of cataloguing, the rev counter and clock were not operational however the rev counter may be fixed prior to the sale.

  • The car is offered with a Swansea registration document, current road fund licence and MoT certificate.

  • This privately owned car, an original lightweight, was bought as a basket case in 1990 and stripped to the last nut and bolt for restoration. The coachwork was restored by a former BMW panel beater and all running gear including engine and gearbox rebuilt. This restoration was completed in 1991, the original body shell being retained and new alloy door skins fitted. Since restoration some 15 years ago the car has only covered a modest mileage and has been enthusiast maintained. Photographs record the restoration. The vendor reports that, at the time of cataloguing, the rev counter and clock were not operational however the rev counter may be fixed prior to the sale.
