History as commented by the owner:

My car is a lightweight. When I bought it I didn't know there were differences between CSL versions--I thought a CSL was a CSL (other than there were LHD and RHD versions). I just wanted a CSL, thinking I should have one because my company specializes in CSs and the CSL is the ultimate CS. Plus I wanted a Golf CSL, because I love that color, so the first CSL I found for sale that was Golf I bought--not knowing that it was a lightweight, or that city packs even existed, and not knowing it was an Alpina CSL either. I was just lucky I bought the car that I did. The seller gave me everything he could remember on the car. About the restoration, when I bought my car it was in bad condition, having been kept outside in Japan (which is a very wet country), had been painted white, and had a fuel cell and shag carpeting installed. I had the rust repaired and the car repainted right way, taking it back to Golf, and then over the next several years restored the rest of the car--including the interior, the engine, the gas tank, wheels, and many other parts. I added original Motorsport front and rear spoilers, BBS wheels, upgraded the suspension, etc. and used it as a track car for BMW club and vintage racing events. I even installed an M1 procar engine at one point, to get more power for the track. After that engine broke I found out the car was an Alpina CSL, so decided to re-restore it as it would've been originally from Alpina. I removed the M1 engine and all the Motorsport parts, had the body stripped, re-repaired and repainted, and did a full re-restoration after collecting all of the genuine Alpina parts that were missing from it that I could, finishing it in 2013 in time to display it at the BMW club events at Monterey and at Van Nuys, CA where it won trophies at both events. I stored it until 2016 and showed it again at Monterey that year for the 100th anniversary of BMW. It went back into storage after that, where it is today. The steering wheel is an original Alpina wheel.
