Reverse History

The car at the time of accident had covered 119,000 genuine miles...

Below is written by Jon Furley.

Finally in 2009 Chris Jones had the car for a year for another strip down and rebuild of corroded body sections, consisting of front drivers side  floor pan and inner wheel arch panels, also replacing the sills, all three sections. I managed to find a pair of original CSL outer sills and Chris, rather skillfully and beautifully fabricated inner and middle sections. At the same time I had a large portion of the chrome trim parts re-chromed at Silver Bronz here in Alton. The car finally reappeared from it's rebuild in May last year. Looking fantastic. The interior of the car was still the original upholstery with reclining scheel bucket seats, which I believe were very rare.

I purchased the car in 1992 with 45,000 miles on the clock. At which point I came to see you and your dad at Castle Coombe track day to discuss what needed doing. Chris Jones Had the car the following year for a full strip back to bare metal rebuild. Most of the work consisted of rear end work, fitting new spare wheel well and  fuel tank surround  plus wheel arch inserts, Photos available. Alex Elliott ( ACE Engineering) supplied me with a new cylinder head and Schrick 300 degree cam in 1993, after the timing chain failed and I rebuilt the top end of the car....... I have all the bills from Munich Legends and Ace over the years for parts and services on file. Munich Legends fitted Bilstein Fast Road shocks all round, around 1994 along with the ALPINA alloy wheels she is currently sporting .

The car has had 8 owners during it's life, the second owner, Anthony Russel, had a lot of mechanical work and body work done in 1980, I have all the receipts. The mechanical work consisted of fitting a five speed manual Getrag overdrive gearbox and a higher final drive ratio. The engine was also removed and had a Full Alpina Blueprint rebuild, both block and cylinder head were machined matched ported, blown and balanced. A full stainless steel manifold and exhaust system was also made and fitted. I have the full spec sheet here...... The body work was a front end rebuild replacing both front wings with genuine CSL wings

First Keeper was Chris Amon, who raced the Batmobile for BMW as a works driver then went on to drive formula one cars for Ferrari during the seventies. I have a letter from Chris to confirm this fact. He was contacted by Nigel Gostellow who owned the car prior to me. Car was given to Chris Amon from new as a company car, there is a photo of him and the car in a Classic Car article on Famous people and their cars.
