Title: MMF 95L

Untaxed in the UK since July 1rst 2002

History: The MMF plate is a Nth East London issue. If the plate is the original to the car ( But lots of CSLs had plate swaps ) then it was most likely supplied by " Reliance Garages " of Chingford. It's date of registration October 1972, indicates that it could well have been a "Drive Back" car....

Modification: non BMW glass roof

Transactions:

  • 2006: for sale, asking price: 20.000,- EUR
  • January 14 2006: proposed at Auction (see below), estimate  €9000-€11000, not sold

Modifications and maintenance (2006 owner's comments):

Some years ago the car did get a complete rebuild in England, where it was brought to 1973 “Batmobile”-Look and correct white painting.

One of the pre-owners did install a glass-sunroof and converted the engine from 3-Litre-Injection to 3 Dellorto-twin-carburators with Pipercross air-filters, which was a very common conversion by the times, as ALPINA, BMW and SCHNITZER themselves also ran their racing-csl`s with twin-carburators. What shall I say, the sound that engine produces is incredible and in combination with the marvellous “Batmobile”-outfit and the genuine SCHEEL-seats your *** gets kicked back into times when racing was risky and sex was safe.

Of course, this is not a perfect concours car – you would pay about 70.000,- EUR for – but much more a nice survivour with some spots to work at: e.g. body-/paintwork, electric windows, rust in the spare-wheel-pan. Except the rust-hole in the spare-wheel-pan I couldn`t find another rust-hole. The car seems to be very solid by its metal. Overall this CSL has got a very perstine patina.

Shifting is very smooth, engine runs great and strong, very good road holding and this specific kind of charisma you usually cannot buy.

An eye-catcher are the marvellous 17”-BBS-split-rims, which are original BMW-parts. They measure 8” all around and wear 235/45-17”-tyres. This are two-pice-rims in nearly identical design to the classic BBS-rims used in the 70`s on the racing-csl`s.

If desired, you can get a set of original 7x14”-ALPINA-rims with the car, that by the way still got its aluminium bonnet and trunk-lid. The rims and the aluminium-parts are very rare and pretty expensive, if missing.

New parts: all water hoses and coolant-pipe, thermostat-housing, front-axle-wishbones (all genuine BMW-parts), engine-oil, oil-filter, spark-plugs.

This car was imported from England some years ago. All English documents as C5E and tax-stamps, owners-manual and correct 14”-ALPINA spare-wheel go with the car.

Information from Auctioneer Coys Maastricht - Grandes Marques:

Fitted with a genuine BMW 'Batmobile' Spoiler Kit, to resemble the competition Touring Car of the day. Rebuilt in 1988 / 89 the potent 3.0, straight six engine was converted from fuel injection to triple carbs and has only covered little mileage since the rebuild. Finished in white with the period blue and red racing stripes the current owner states the car is mechanically in excellent condition, while the matching black cloth interior is in good order.
Estimate: €9000-€11000, outcome : not sold.

History: Brian Godfrey : I bought the car from a dealer in the Midlands in the mid nineteen eighties.. I understood it was a rust-box , underseal was non-existence then. The car was rebuilt over about 3 years. It required a new front, inner and outer wings and a complete retire. A local BMW dealer helped with this. At that time parts were readily available. I purchased the BAT wings from a supplier outside Brighton. The injection system was replaced from TWR and triple Delortes were fitted. I used to take it to the Castle Coombe BMW race days and get up to 125mph but no more when a friend rolled his car into scrap. I had 3 cars at that time and 1 had to go. I sold it at auction in London in 2003.
