Summary:

BMW 3.5 CSL Group 2 Batmobile, bearing the chassis number 2210270. This E9 started life as a 1972 3.0 CS race car. It was built by the garage FALTZ, an ALPINA authorized dealer in Essen. It competed in the 1972/73 DRM driven by Rudiger Faltz. In June '73 the car was sold to Graziano Cancian and it was upgraded to 3.5 CSL specification as seen here. The work was overseen by Manfred Nicht, Benedens’ team chief. The car was raced in a number of DRM and ETCC events until 1976. In 1979 t car was sold to Peter Herke in California who upgraded it to Group 5 specification to run in the IMSA Series. It was raced until '85 and then placed in storage before being sold in 2007. It was purchased by Speedmaster in the UK. The car was meticulously restored back to its original Group 2 specification as it was raced by Cancian in ETCC. The car was then sold in 2011 and again in 2015 to a collector who had the engine, suspension and brakes completely overhauled.

Chassis 2210270 was originally built by the Faltz-Alpina team, the car was sold to Benedens Tuning Company, and raced in the German and European Touring Car Championships in 1973, 1974 and 1975, at historic tracks such as Wunstorf, Zolder and the Nurburgring with the Josef Benedens Tuning Company for driver Graziano Cancian.

The car was then exported to the USA where it was upgraded to Group 5 specification and raced in the IMSA sportscar series for a number of years as a privateer entry with Peter Herke.

There is a large amount of history and information on the car and the races it has competed in, including race results, period photographs and other technical information.

The car has been fully restored with photographic restoration to Group 2 specification including rebuilt 3.5L engine with Kugelfisher Fuel Injection, Schnitzer Intake system, rebuilt gearbox, and differential, as well as fully restored bodyshell, suspension, new brake system, oil and water systems. Fitted with Bilstein adjustable dampers, diff cooler, and BBS wheels, as well as new fuel system, Appendix K roll cage with certificates,

Complete and ready to go with all Group 5 updates and bodywork included. Eligible for both the Masters Series and Le Mans Classic, as well as other historic races, FIA HTP papers applied for.

The car was put up for auction, in the UK, mid February 2009 - guide price UKP 200K circa $286K at today's xrate. This is the car campaigned by Peter Werke i the USA until sold via John Starkey into the UK in 2007 - price then $175K and price paid was very close (according to the buyer who was today's seller), that was circa UKP 87.5K mid 2007. The car was completely rebuilt to its original Falz Alpina spec based on photographic records, quality apparently exceptional. Examples of the rebuilder's work have been featured - look up QM Engineering, Brackley, if interested.
